A delicacy in Asia, a bowl of high quality shark fin soup can cost as much as $150. Because of this high price, shark fishing and finning is a major contributor to the decline of shark stocks in recent years. After the shark’s fins are cut off, the mutilated fish are thrown back into the sea by fishermen. Though still alive, the fish are unable to swim without their fins and die agonizing deaths either by starvation, which can take weeks, or by being eaten alive by other predators. It’s estimated that up to 100 million sharks a year die in this way, all so man can eat shark’s fin soup. Can’t folks just eat sweet corn chowder or minestrone instead?
